Moving Offices? An IT Checklist for the 90 Days Before

The furniture can arrive the day before. The internet connection can’t. Business internet circuits often take weeks to order and install, and a move without them means a first Monday with no email, no phones and no line-of-business apps.

Here’s how to plan the IT side of an office move.

90 days out

  • Order internet service for the new address, and ask the provider for an install date in writing.
  • Walk the new space with your MSP/IT provider: where desks, printers and the network equipment will go.
  • Check the cabling. Is there network cable to every desk, and somewhere secure for the equipment?
  • Review your phone system. Will your numbers move with you, and does anything need to be ordered?

60 days out

  • Plan Wi-Fi coverage for the new layout, including a separate guest network.
  • Decide what’s being replaced rather than moved, such as old printers or network switches.
  • Book any new cabling, and get the work scheduled before furniture goes in.

30 days out

  • Confirm the internet install date again.
  • Update your address with vendors, your domain registrar, Google Business Profile and your bank.
  • Label every device and cable before it’s unplugged.
  • Confirm a recent backup and a test restore before anything is moved.

Move week

  • Set up network equipment, firewall and Wi-Fi in the new space before staff arrive.
  • Test phones, printers and every line-of-business app.
  • Have someone onsite on the first morning to fix what didn’t come across.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I plan IT for an office move?

Start about 90 days out. Business internet circuits often take weeks to order and install, and cabling should be done before furniture goes in. Ordering service early is the step that most often decides whether the first day in the new office works.

What IT tasks are on an office move checklist?

Order internet service, walk the space, check cabling, plan Wi-Fi and phones, decide what to replace, update your address with vendors, label devices, confirm a recent backup and test restore, then set up and test the network before staff arrive.

Does ITAssurance handle office moves?

Yes. Office moves are part of ITAssurance Professional Services, along with network design, structured cabling, Wi-Fi and firewalls, for Maryland businesses.
